Frequently Asked Questions

TESOL - TEFL - TESL - TEAL - ELT - TESL What’s the difference?

They are essentially all the same thing. They are terms used to describe the teaching of the English language to those that do not speak the language. The main difference is the country where the teaching takes place. TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) are standard terms for English language teaching in non-English speaking countries. TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and TEAL (Teaching English as an Additional Language) are normally related to English teaching among immigrant and refugee communities in English speaking countries. The acronyms TEFL and TESL are more frequently used in Europe. The acronyms TESOL and TEAL are more commonly used in North America.

What is the difference between a TESOL Certificate and TESOL Kids Certificate?

This innovative course provides the participants with a known TESOL certificate, whilst also preparing them to teach children. It helps participants to enhance their skills in teaching to children, following the successful completion of the TESOL course. Instead of adding one or two additional modules that focus on teaching children, this focus is integrated into all modules.

Employers who ask for a TESOL certificate, will not accept certificates that are not accredited or that are given following a course programme that is less than 120 lessons.

If you would like to teach English, this is the programme to choose. All our tutors are English teachers who have extensive experience in teaching English as a second language. In order to strike a balance between theory and practice, and to prepare graduates to teach in the real world, the course includes a practical traineeship (Practicum). All trainees receive individual attention and support throughout the course.

Does TESOL award an international recognised certificate following the successful completion of the course?

Yes The TESOL course is delivered by American Culture UK and fully accredited by OXFORD LTD (Ref: 11424452).

Do I need to have a degree?

If you are a native English speaker, a degree is not necessary. Having said that, a degree is recommended in order to legally find employment. If you are not a native English speaker, you must have graduated from a higher education programme that is at least two years long. This course will prepare you to teach English in an effective way; however, finding employment is a competitive process and having a degree is always preferred by employers.

Do I need to speak the language of the country I want to teach in?

Hayır. TESOL programı öğretmenleri evrensel olarak kabul edilmiş olan "Communicative Approach" ile eğitilirler. Bu yaklaşım ile bütün dil düzeyleri için sınıflarda öğretim yapılırken İngilizce konuşulacaktır.

Do I need to be a native speaker to take this course?

No. Those who speak English as a second or foreign language, need to demonstrate competency in all language skills. Some schools do want their English teachers to be native English speakers, but this is not the case for all schools.

Do I need any previous teaching experience?

No. Previous experience in teaching is not required. The course helps you acquire skills and abilities to start a new teaching career.

Do I need knowledge of grammar?

Participants are expected to have a good command of English where they use English properly and without any mistakes. Having said that, this does not always mean that you have a good understanding of English grammar rules; therefore, the course includes a module on grammar awareness. This module will help you to review, refresh and update your knowledge. Native speakers who have never studied English as a foreign language may need to spend more time on this module.

Do I need a visa or work permit to work abroad?

Owing to the fact that different countries have different rules and regulations, American Culture UK advises all who plan to teach abroad to get in touch with the relevant country’s embassy or consulate.

How long should I study for this course?

This depends on you and your knowledge and experience in teaching ESL to young students. Study times are flexible, and you can determine your own programme in line with your lifestyle and work.

The course requires approximately 150 hours of study. After the enrolment date, trainees have 6 months to complete the course. You can determine your own pace but the more time you spend studying, the earlier you can complete the course. This means that you can complete the course in three weeks, or depending on how busy you are, in 4-5 months.

Will I get teaching experience during the course?

Whilst studying the modules of the course, you will be asked to prepare two lessons and deliver your lessons. These lessons are not marked but provide you with an opportunity to develop yourself in a non-threatening and supportive environment. During these lessons, your personal tutor will act like your student, and provide you with comprehensive feedback and guidance afterwards.

After the course, following two online lessons and all modular tasks, you will be expected to prepare and submit two to four lessons for Teaching Practice. The mark on the Teaching Practice certificate will reflect your performance in these lessons. The feedback and advise you will receive for your Teaching Practice performance will also help you advance your teaching skills.

Who are the tutors?

Throughout the course, there will be a tutor who will support you personally. All tutors are fully qualified teachers who are experienced in English language teaching and teacher training.

How will I be assessed?

In order to prevent unnecessary stress and anxiety, instead of assessing the trainees through a final exam, the course has an integrated continuous assessment system in place, which also allows maximising feedback and guidance opportunities. There are no final written exams.

After each of the modules, all trainees will be asked to submit assignments that are designed to help you demonstrate that you have learned and understood the content of the module and are able to use the skills and strategies therein.

Your own personal tutor will provide you with comprehensive feedback about your assignments and give you specific advice. After you have completed all your assignments for a module, you will be marked on that module.

The grades that will be used for each module and for the certificates are as below:
A1 - Distinction
A2 - Excellent
B1 - Very good
B2 - Good
C- Satisfactory
